Like many 7-year-olds, my daughter dreams of being a pop star. She loves singing and learning dance routines, but performing in front of other people has always felt daunting.
At a parents’ evening, her teacher and I agreed on a challenge: she would perform a song in front of her class. Instead of choosing a familiar song, we decided to create one that belonged to her.
Creating something of her own
I have no background in songwriting, music production or vocal editing. AI gave us a way to learn as we went and turn an idea into a finished experience.
Together, we developed the theme and lyrics for an original song called Coming Out of My Shell. We created the backing music, recorded her singing, enhanced the vocal track and built an animated video to use as a backdrop when she performs.
What AI made possible
The technology removed barriers that would previously have required several specialist skills. It helped with lyric development, music creation, voice enhancement, character design and video production.
But AI did not create the purpose or the confidence. Its value was in giving us the means to make something meaningful together, quickly enough for the idea to become real.
Designing around privacy
Because she is seven, I chose not to use her name or image online. The character in the video is AI-generated. Her own recorded voice is audible, with enhancement used during production.
That boundary was part of the design from the beginning. Responsible use is not something to add after a project is finished. It should shape how the solution is built.
The result before the performance
The school performance is still ahead of her, so I cannot yet claim a final result. The process has already changed how she talks about it, though. She is no longer simply preparing to sing in front of her class. She is preparing to perform her own song.
She has started creating dance moves and imagining the moment on stage. The challenge that once felt intimidating now feels like something she owns.
What I took from it
This project reminded me that the best reason to use AI is not simply because it can produce something impressive. It is because it can make something possible that might otherwise never happen.
The song and video turned a daunting challenge into a creative project my daughter could make her own. The technology enabled the process. Her growing confidence was the part that mattered.
